Wild About Campsea (WAC)

We are a group of residents with an interest in wildlife who came together after the Covid lockdown to work with the Parish Council to improve biodiversity in and around the village. We help to look after our public open spaces and encourage residents to adopt wildlife-friendly gardening techniques. With support from the Parish Council and some funding from East Suffolk Council’s Community Enabling Budget and Field to Fork initiatives we have:

  • Established a community garden next to the village hall to demonstrate wildlife-friendly food production.
  • Undertaken periodic litter clearances around the village.
  • Planted over 400 trees around the recreation ground to improve the hedgerows and a small wood.
  • Surveyed an area of scrub on the edge of the village for potential biodiversity improvements.
  • Helped to maintain a wildlife-friendly churchyard.
  • Initiated a hedgehog highway scheme to help this endangered species by encouraging access to gardens for food and nesting sites.
  • Held craft sessions to make bird feeders, bug houses, hedgehog houses and nest boxes.
  • Held indoor talks and demonstrations on growing food in small spaces, composting, foraging, and gardening for biodiversity.

 

From time to time we hold special events in the village hall but try to meet regularly at the cabin in the community garden on the recreation ground. During the growing season (British Summer Time) we meet every Sunday between 2pm and 4pm; during winter months (Greenwich Mean Time) we meet on the first Sunday of each month between 2pm and 4pm. 

 

Residents are welcome to visit the community garden at any time and make use of the food that is grown there. We would welcome new helpers – including children with parents and young people keen to learn. There is no formal membership and no charge for involvement, although we appreciate donations from time to time to help us meet costs. We are overseen by a sub-committee of the Parish Council and comply with their safeguarding and health and safety policies.
